Future Worlds Center collaborates with Anakyklos Perivallontiki

Dear friends

We are glad to inform you about the recent collaboration between Anakyklos Perivallontiki and the non-governmental organisation Future Worlds Center. 

Anakyklos Perivallontiki is a non-profit environmental organisation that carries out a textile-recycling program in Cyprus. Anakyklos collects used textiles such as clothes, shoes, household items (i.e. linen, bedspreads, curtains), handbags, and belts, as well as small furniture and kitchen utensils. The collected items are carefully sorted and those that can be reused are offered for free to people in need, at the charity shop of Anakyklos in old Nicosia, 14 Mouson Street. 

Anakyklos also arranges the delivery of clothes to people in need living all around Cyprus, and offers support to the community by financially assisting welfare institutions working with vulnerable groups. In addition, Anakyklos responds to crises and emergency situations abroad. For instance, Anakyklos has recently dispatched 700 kilos of children's clothes to nursery schools in Athens. 

Future Worlds Center, in an effort to further support asylum seekers and refugees which receive assistance under the organisation’s project ‘Strengthening Asylum in Cyprus’ will be offering 20Euro coupons to each member of underprivileged families - to be used at Anakyklos' shop in old Nicosia.  Future Worlds Center will be a collection point for Anakyklos. Please note that Future Worlds Center can also receive used toys in good condition.

We are hoping that you will respond generously to this call, thus helping people in need and actively contributing towards the creation of a cleaner and more sustainable environment.

Αγαπητοί φίλοι και φίλες 

Με χαρά σας ανακοινώσουμε τη πρόσφατη συνεργασία μεταξύ του μη-κυβερνητικού οργανισμού Future Worlds Center και του μη κερδοσκοπικού οργανισμού Ανάκυκλος Περιβαλλοντική. Ο Ανάκυκλος λειτουργεί τα τελευταία χρόνια ένα πρόγραμμα ανακύκλωσης ρουχισμού στην Κύπρο, μαζεύοντας μεταχειρισμένο ρουχισμό όπως παπούτσια, ρούχα, τσάντες, ζώνες, όπως επίσης και οικιακά είδη (σεντόνια, κουρτίνες κλπ.),  μικρά έπιπλα και σκεύη κουζίνας.  

Όλα τα αντικείμενα που μαζεύονται, διαλέγονται προσεκτικά, και όσα μπορούν να επαναχρησιμοποιηθούν, προσφέρονται δωρεάν σε ανθρώπους που τα έχουν ανάγκη στο φιλανθρωπικό κατάστημα του Ανάκυκλου στην παλιά Λευκωσία, στην οδό Μουσών 14. Ο Ανάκυκλος στέλνει επίσης ρουχισμό σε ανθρώπους που μένουν σε άλλες πόλεις και χωριά στην Κύπρο, και παρέχει κοινωνική υποστήριξη σε ευάλωτες ομάδες ανθρώπων μέσω της οικονομικής ενίσχυσης οργανισμών ευημερίας. Επιπλέον, ο Ανάκυκλος ανταποκρίνεται σε καταστάσεις έκτακτης ανάγκης στο εξωτερικό. Ένα πρόσφατο παράδειγμα ήταν η αποστολή 700 κιλών παιδικού ρουχισμού σε νηπιαγωγεία της Αθήνας. 

Ο οργανισμός Future Worlds Center στα πλαίσια του προγράμματος, ‘Ενδυναμώνοντας το Άσυλο στην Κύπρο’, σε μια προσπάθεια να στηρίξει τους αιτητές ασύλου και πρόσφυγες που αποτείνονται στον οργανισμό, θα προσφέρει κουπόνια του Ανάκυκλου, των 20 ευρώ σε κάθε μέλος των οικογενειών που αντιμετωπίζουν σοβαρά οικονομικά προβλήματα και συγχρόνως θα αποτελεί σημείο συλλογής για τον Ανάκυκλο. Ο Future Worlds Center θα δέχεται και μεταχειρισμένα παιχνίδια σε καλή κατάσταση. 

Ελπίζουμε ότι θα ανταποκριθείτε με γενναιοδωρία σε αυτό το κάλεσμα,  προσφέροντας έτσι στους συνανθρώπους μας που έχουν ανάγκη, καθώς ταυτόχρονα θα συνεισφέρετε στην δημιουργία ενός καθαρότερου και βιώσιμου περιβάλλοντος. 

Τα πιο πάνω ανακυκλώσιμα είδη θα συλλέγονται στο γραφείο  του Future Worlds Center στην οδό Προμηθέως 5, 5^ος όροφος, στη Λευκωσία ή στους ειδικούς κάδους του Ανάκυκλου.

A step backwards on child detentions

CYPRUS has taken a step backwards when it comes to the detention of children, a prominent NGO said yesterday.

At the launch of a global campaign to end immigration detention of children, which is being launched at UN Human Rights Council, Corina Drousiotou, the Senior Legal Advisor for asylum seekers and refugees at Future Worlds Center said the Cypriot authorities have so far avoided the detention of children.

However an amendment to the law in December 2011 now permits the detention of minors as well.

“We have always been proud of the fact that Cyprus, unlike many other EU states, has not detained children; we consider this an important tribute to the human rights record of the country and evidence of our humanitarian and ethical standards,” said Drousiotou.

“But the recent amendment in the law that permits detention of minors is gravely disappointing and we are observing the possible implementation with great concern; it seems like we are taking steps backwards on a crucial issue that for us permits no discussion, children do not belong in detention under any circumstances.”

After a visit to Cyprus recently, Amnesty International raised its concerns with the Cypriot immigration authorities regarding the legality and the length of detention, and urged the government to fulfil its international obligations and respect the rights of asylum seekers and migrants. Amnesty International delegates visited three different detention facilities on the island and almost every detainee they talked to, spoke of lack of legal aid, poor conditions, and insufficient medical care, a statement from Future Worlds Center said.

“Governments should not detain children just because they are fleeing abuse, war and poverty or do not have any papers. Many of these kids are unaccompanied, have lost their parents, are already traumatized and just want safety” said Jeroen Van Hove, Campaign Coordinator of the International Detention Coalition, “Children should not be locked up. These kids and families do not pose any threat to the community.”

A handful of countries around the world, such as Belgium, Argentina and Japan use community based alternatives to immigration detention for children. Whereas Brazil and South Africa do not detain asylum applicants at all, and operate long-standing and successful alternatives to detention.
